Can You Weld Silver? Yes, with a Laser Welder

Laser Welding Silver

Joule energy output is not the only qualification of a laser welding machine that is required to weld Silver successfully. High Peak Pulse Power ( > 5.5KW) is also imperative when laser welding silver, for instance, a laser welder with a high Joule energy output and low Kw will be hard pressed to attain any sort of depth during Keyhole welding. It is for this reason we must choose a laser welder that is powerful enough for the job at hand.

Laser welding Silver even with the correct laser welding machine is still no Cake Walk! Silver will try to fight you every step of the way. It will never "play nice" like Yellow Gold. Silver is one of the most highly-reflective metals and we can lose up to 50% of the Joule energy output through reflectivity alone. It is for this reason we must still condition the surface of the weld zone prior to laser welding so the energy will be absorbed into the material. A dark ink marker works well for fighting reflectivity. Having the correct parameter settings and pulse shape dialed into the laser welding machine is also very important to achieve clean Keyhole welds. The use of Argon gas while you are laser welding helps prevent oxidation, pitting and stress fractures from occurring. The use of Argon gas is highly recommended when laser welding silver.

Laser Welding Wire

Another thing to consider when laser welding silver is the choice of filler wire being used for the project. Filler wire can also contribute to a successful outcome. Fine Silver and 925 Silver welding wire are also very reflective and if used, the operator typically cranks up the power on the laser welding machine to get this type of welding wire to flow properly. However, adding too much power during the filling process can cause damage or pitting to the underlying Keyhole welds. LaserStar's Silver alloy laser welding wire is designed to flow at a slightly lower temperature than the Silver itself thus giving us that nice "buttery" laser weld we are looking for while adding material to the laser welding job.
